National Environment Centre - Earthbeat. And now to an Australian institution with an environmental mission but with a far more local focus. The National Environment Centre near Albury is a TAFE college specialising in sustainable agriculture and environmental sciences. It too was built with a green focus, and Paul Willis paid the centre a visit with lecturer Rob Fenton, who began by explaining the underground cooling system. Paul Willis: So we've got basically a metre cube in front of us with a few little polythene protectors of newly- planted shrubs; why have you got a metre cube in the middle of the paddock? NEHA offers a variety of programs, education, employment opportunities, and various other products and services to those in the environmental field. NATIONAL GREENING PROGRAM. The National Greening Program (NGP) is a massive forest rehabilitation program of the government established by virtue of Executive Order No. 24, 2011 by President Benigno S. EPA's mission is to protect human health and the environment. National Estuary Month (1 of 5) Sustainability: Helena, MT. National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), a constituent laboratory of CSIR endeavours to provide Leadership in environmental science and. Environment ministry holds green clearance for Odisha iron. Rob Fenton: That's the inlet to one of our cooling systems. That goes down to the pipes 3 metres under the ground, the air bounces around in there, and then when we want to, that's pumped into the buildings. They look like air conditioning ducts inside the buildings but it's really just pumping 1. Paul Willis: So who designed this system? I mean the actual principle of running pipes under the ground is quite an old one, but who actually designed this particular system? Rob Fenton: A fantastic architect called Lindsay Clare from Sydney designed this whole thing. He did a magnificent job. Paul Willis: What about the grounds, how much property is this particular building standing on? Rob Fenton: We're pretty much standing in the middle of 4. Environment Centre and by our students. Paul Willis: And what do you grow and what do you get up to on that organic farm? Rob Fenton: Our main produce is organic lambs, African fat- tail lambs. We have olive trees, we have some bush tucker and bull goats. Paul Willis: And I understand you even have one corner set aside for nothing. Rob Fenton: Yes, that's right. One of the courses we do here is basic archaeology- type course, Aboriginal culture. Yes we have our students down there making stone axes at times. Paul Willis: Can I have a look? Rob Fenton: Yes, for sure. Paul Willis: We've come to a small clearing surrounded by a few gum trees and in the middle of some quite large paddocks and this clearing is littered with bits of broken rock. This is your mapping yard. Rob Fenton: Yes, that's right. This is a site set up by some of our students doing a course in Aboriginal cultural site management, and what they've done here is set up something to help people recognise if they come across something that may be significant from a cultural point of view. So we can see that they've made a fireplace in the middle there ????? So we've removed the vegetation and put the gravel down, because this is an organic farm and we can't continue spraying so this is what our students expect to see. Paul Willis: It's quite surprising that an advanced agricultural college in one respect, you're doing things like setting up a mapping site; what other courses are you teaching? Rob Fenton: Well actually agriculture is only a small part of our job really. Most of our courses are really environmentally based, so we do things like natural resource management, bushland regeneration, things like that. But we also do agriculture and organic farming, we teach permaculture. Yes, so it's a whole range of things, and all those things, the edges are blurred, they're not separate things, and so there's an opportunity here for each of those areas to blend across each other and help each other out, and it's quite important that anyone working in natural resource management, and that includes agriculture, would understand what they see when they come across a site like this. Paul Willis: Now we are actually in the middle of rural New South Wales/Victoria; how do the locals take having a National Environment Centre on their doorstep, how's it fitting in to the local landscape? Rob Fenton: Quite well. We're a fairly active member of the community here, particularly the environment side of it. The local farmers around here are fantastic and they quite enjoy driving past just to see what shenanigans we're up to now. So we get on well with the local community, and it works really well. We're active members of the Landcare groups and things like that. Paul Willis: And are many of the messages going sideways into the surrounding farms? Rob Fenton: I hope they are. It's very hard for us to test that, but I hope they are. Most of the local farmers come here on a regular basis to different meetings and things. I'm pretty sure that they would be. I'm sure we're a source of amusement to them sometimes. Paul Willis: Amusement as well as change? Rob Fenton: I hope both, yes. National Collaborative . We believe that our society can achieve better outcomes in both education and health by increasing connection and collaboration between the health and education sectors. Our work toward this vision focuses on the National Collaborative on Education and Health, a group we co- convene with Trust for America. Teachers are working hard to share lessons and build the knowledge, skills and habits that will help students succeed beyond the classroom. But millions of students are not able to attend school in environments that support the connection between health and learning. They cannot engage in physical activity during the day, their school buildings lack healthy air, access to fresh water, nutritious food and/or a school nurse; all of which are important to supporting academic achievement. On top of that, one out of every four students has one or more health problems, such as asthma or diabetes, that further undermine her ability to focus in school or even attend. Health and education systems are inextricably linked, yet they are missing key opportunities to work together to support student health and learning. If we can incorporate health and wellness into the school culture and environment, we can help close the academic achievement gap and ensure this generation does not become the first in American history to live shorter, less healthy lives than their parents. Recognizing this connection and acting to strengthen collaboration between the health and education sectors is one of the most important steps we can take to support the success and well- being of the next generation. This is the driving force of the National Collaborative on Education and Health. Mission. To identify opportunities for the health and education sectors, individually and together with others, to contribute to ensuring that all children, regardless of income, race, ethnicity or geography, have the opportunity to be healthy and academically and developmentally successful, allowing them to reach their full potential as productive members of the United States. Vision and Values. Educators know that healthy students are better prepared to learn and succeed in school. Yet current health and education policy misses several simple, vital opportunities to boost academic success through health promotion and school wellness. We believe that prioritizing health in schools will yield lifelong benefits for the 5. America. The school setting supports students. In this environment, good nutrition, physical activity, basic safety, clean air and water, access to care, and education about making healthy choices allow students to thrive. In a healthy school, students learn. Achieving this vision will require: Providing safe and healthy places to learn and play. All students deserve access to a clean and safe environment with good air quality. Schools should provide students with nutritious meals and opportunities for physical activity. We must integrate health and wellness into the definition of a successful school and recognize the ways in which these elements support learning. As we evaluate school performance and seek to elevate successful practices, we must acknowledge the role that health and wellness play in student achievement. Closing the achievement gap, eliminating health disparities. Research shows that higher levels of achievement are often related to health. Until we address the health disparities that many low- income minority students face, learning disparities will persist. Providing teachers, principals and school staff with knowledge and skills to create a healthy school environment. School personnel need information and support for proven, cost- effective strategies to improve the delivery of school health services, promote healthy and sustainable operations and implement healthy classroom practices. Ensuring access to needed health services to students at school. Access to health services is necessary to ensure students are healthy and ready to learn. Making health services available at schools is an efficient and cost- effective way to reach the 5. Research shows that access to care. In order for these efforts to succeed, school leaders must engage parents and community members in understanding the connection between student health and achievement. Such efforts can build support for a healthy environment and ensure that families take full advantage of care available at school. By following this vision, we can create a better future for our nation by improving student health and wellness, and ensuring students are healthy and ready to learn. History. Health in Mind. The work of the National Collaborative grew out of Health in Mind, an initiative created by Healthy Schools Campaign and Trust for America. In 2. 01. 2, HSC and TFAH released the report Health in Mind: Improving Education through Wellness and presented a set of key policy recommendations to then- Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and then- Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius at a public event attended by advocates from both the health and education sectors, including the presidents of our nation. More than 1. 50 attendees from 8. More than 8. 0 organizations signed on in support of the Health in Mind vision. At this event, then- Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. I know the only way we can get there is if our students. This work is extraordinarily important. Please hold me accountable for being a good partner and figuring out where we have students who aren. Our children have one chance to get a good education. What this report does is, in very layman. Health also occurs where we live, where we learn, where we work, where we play, and where we pray,” she said in the charge she issued to the Working Group in 2. She charged the group with exploring the full potential of a multi- sector, public- private partnership in assuring that schools create the conditions of student health and wellness. In other words — while Health in Mind focused on the role of the federal government, the working group looked more broadly to both public and private leaders in the health and education sectors. At the completion of its work, the Working Group recommended the formation of the National Collaborative on Education and Health. National Collaborative. Healthy Schools Campaign and Trust for America. The Collaborative brings together advocates, policymakers, school stakeholders and funders to work toward more fully integrating education and health.
